Mark this one on your calendar, Clemson notched it's best win of the season on January 29, 2009. Not only could it have been a season changing game, it might have been a comeback that stated, "We are for real!"
The Tigers trailed at one point by fifteen points and looked completely out of sync. I found myself wondering at the half why Clemson didn't have a player like Delaney on the floor. I was wondering what caused Rivers to be a player who could score at will, but was rarely able to create is own shot. I guess, K.C. was asking himself the same thing.
In the second half the Tigers attacked from the get go. Even after a run by Virginia Tech, Oliver Purnell made one of his best decisions of the night, calling a timeout. With 17:14 left in the game, the Tigers trailed the Hokies 61-46. From that point forward, with the exception of a few minutes, Clemson went on a tear. The Tigers hadn't made that type of comeback since the La Salle game in the 1990 NCAA tournament. Tonight in Blacksburg, Clemson went on a 26-5 runin the second half to take a 72 - 66 lead.
The Hokies would make a late push, leading 80-78 late, but the Tigers would take control and not trail again. The Tigers held on for an 86-82 win that places them in the top four of the ACC. Congrats to Oliver Purnell and this Clemson team. A win like that has been a long time coming.
